Philippa Gregory, The White Queen

Photobucket
Description: Brother turns on brother to win the ultimate prize, the throne of England, in this dazzling account of the wars of the Plantagenets. They are the claimants and kings who ruled England before the Tudors.

The White Queen tells the story of a woman of extraordinary beauty and ambition who, catching the eye of the newly crowned boy king, marries him in secret and ascends to royalty. While Elizabeth rises to the demands of her exalted position and fights for the success of her family, her two sons become central figures in a mystery that has confounded historians for centuries: the missing princes in the Tower of London whose fate is still unknown. From her uniquely qualified perspective, Philippa Gregory explores this most famous unsolved mystery of English history, informed by impeccable research and framed by her inimitable storytelling skills.

While I think Gregory is an excellent story teller, I found this book to be a little over romantic. But overall a very good book about a women who is not written about all that much. I hope to see more books about her. 4 out of 5

C.S. Harris, When Gods Die

Photobucket
June, 1811. On a summer's evening at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton, the beautiful young wife of an aging Marquis is found dead in the arms of the Prince Regent himself. From her back protrudes a jeweled dagger that once belonged to Bonnie Prince Charlie. Around her neck lies an ancient blue stone and silver necklace said to have been worn by the Druid priestesses of Wales. Legend credited the necklace with mysterious powers—until it was lost at sea with its last owner, the mother of Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin.
Second book in a series about a Nobel man with a heart. The story digs deeper into the mystery surrounding the hero's mother whom Devlin thought drowned off the coast of Brighton. It's now looking as if she lives, that she sailed away from her family. Leaving behind an 11 year old boy to a father that may not be his. The most interesting thing about Harris's writing to me is her layers of mystery that she is slowly building up to. She has created like able characters who are true to their time period. I did skip a few pages though but overall a good story. I keep reading because I care for her characters and want to know how the mysteries within will end. 4 out of 5

Girl in a Blue Dress by Gaynor Arnold

Photobucket Blurb: At the end of her life, Catherine, the cast-off wife of Charles Dickens, gave the letters she had received from her husband to their daughter Kate, asking her to donate them to the British Museum, "so the world may know that he loved me once." The incredible vulnerability and heartache evident beneath the surface of this remark inspired Gaynor Arnold to write Girl in a Blue Dress. Arnold brings the spirit of Catherine Dickens to life in the form of Dorothea "Dodo" Gibson – a woman who is doomed to live in the shadow of her husband, Alfred, the most celebrated author in the Victorian world.
This book made me very thankful of what time period I live in. To have a husband set a wife asside as Dickens did is just so unimaginable to me. Gaynor does an excellent job of bringing the overly self involved Dickens to life. I read a great deal about Dickens before reading this book so I could see how Gaynor would weave fact with fiction. I only wish she would have had Dickens and the fictional Gibson's childhoods more the same. It would have made Dickens to be more understood of some of the things he did in life, how obsessed he was with work and providing for his family, and in some ways it would have made him even more selfish for casting off his unwanted wife. Overall and excellent first author book with a story that moves right along with well written characters. Gaynor lets us view through Victorian era window to visit with a family with a full range of emotions. 5 out of 5

Charlaine Harris, From Dead To Worse

Photobucket
Blurb: After the natural disaster of Hurricane Katrina, and the manmade horror of the explosion at the vampire summit, Sookie Stackhouse is safe but dazed, yearning for things to get back to normal. But her boyfriend Quinn is among the missing. And things are changing, whether the weres and vamps in her corner of Louisiana like it or not. In the ensuing battles, Sookie faces danger, death…and once more, betrayal by someone she loves. And when the fur has finished flying and the cold blood ceases flowing, her world will be forever altered.Book 8 in the series. We just love the HBO series True Blood, so I wanted to listed to one of the CD books. Overall the story is very good but some of the characters are a little different from the show, this is the only fault I have. Book has excellent flow and well developed characters. 4.5 out of 5

C.S. Harris, What Angels Fear

Photobucket Blurb: The year is 1811. As old King George III sinks deeper into madness and the threat of social unrest and revolution haunts the privileged classes, a beautiful young woman is found raped and savagely murdered on the altar steps of an ancient parish church not far from Westminster Abbey. An ornate dueling pistol discovered tangled in the blood-soaked folds of Rachel York's cloak and the damning testimony of a witness both point to one man, Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, a brilliant young nobleman shattered by his experiences in the Napoleonic Wars. When a vicious attack during his arrest leaves a constable near death, Sebastian must run for his life.
Set at the beginning of the Regency with well written characters. 4 1/2 our of 5

C.S. Harris, What Remains Of Heaven

Photobucket
Blurb:London 1812. When the controversial reform-minded Bishop of London is found bludgeoned to death in an ancient crypt beside the corpse of an unidentified man murdered decades before, Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, reluctantly agrees to help with the investigation.

To Sebastian's consternation, the last person to see the Bishop alive was Miss Hero Jarvis, a woman whose already strained relationship with St. Cyr has been complicated by a brief, unexpectedly passionate encounter. As his search for the killer leads him from the back allies of Smithfield to the power corridors of Whitehall, Sebastian must confront the well-guarded secrets of his own family's past—and a devastating truth that could ultimately force him to question who—and what—he really is.
I just love this cover. One of the biggest rules is never to buy a book based on it's cover, but that is exactly what I did. This is book five another rule broke starting a series at the end instead of the beginning, but I couldn't find book one. The characters are well written, true to their time period, Harris has a way of making you not really sure who the killer or evil doer is until the end. Harris's books are fst paced, flow well with just the right mix of action and dialog. Enough so I have tracked down the other 4 books and now am reading them in order. 4.8 out of 5

The King's Nun: A Novel of King Charlemagne, by Catherine Monroe

Photobucket
In the eighth century, a woman with a mind of her own rarely found more than scorn and abuse. Such is life for Amelia of Ardennes, until she becomes a novice in the MŸnster-Bilzen Abbey. In the cloistered world of the church she just might reach her potential as an intellectual and spiritual being. But when Charlemagne, the most powerful man in Europe, visits the abbey, Amelia is chosen to escort the charismatic king and her life is forever changed. Enamored of her spirit and intelligence-as well as her beauty-the king brings her to the palace to act as his trusted advisor. As time passes, the bond between them grows stronger, as does Amelia's determination to become an abbess. And when Charlemagne is pulled away by war, Amelia finds herself torn between her unrequited affection for the king and her devotion to her calling.
I found this book not as rich in history as most period books are, I liked the characters and finished but she's not reached auto buy status. I also found the book a little short, I am sure there isn't much written about this Sainted Women but that should not stop and author, should it? 3 out of 5

Seduction Is Forever, by Jenna Petersen

Photobucket Blurb: Master spy Emily Redgrave hasn’t been the same since a night six months ago when she was cut down by a would-be assassin’s bullet. Though she is physically recovered, she’s still haunted by memories of the trauma and regrets for what almost happened. She’s desperate to re-enter the field and regain her confidence. When she’s assigned to follow and protect Grant Ashbury, the Earl of Westfield, she reluctantly accepts, knowing this ‘babysitting’ duty could very well lead to more advanced cases.
Generally I shy away from spy type novels, but this one had just the right mix. With a good plot and well developed characters. 4.5 out of 5

Wicked All Day, by Liz Carlyle

Photobucket
Blurb:Miss Zoë Armstrong is beautiful, charming, rich, and utterly unmarriageable. So, while she may be the ton's most sparkling diamond, her choice of husbands looks more like a list of London's most unsavory fortune hunters. Since a true-love marriage seems impossible, Zoë has accepted -- no, embraced -- her role as society's most incomparable flirt and mischief maker...until in one reckless, vulnerable moment, her future is shattered.
Stuart Rowland, the brooding Marquess of Mercer, has been part of Zoë's extended family since she was a child. As dark and cynical as Zoë is lively, Mercer has always known they would be the worst possible match...until his scapegrace brother Robert does the unthinkable, and winds up betrothed to Zoë. Now, secluded on Mercer's vast estate to escape a looming scandal and the ton's prying eyes, Zoë and Mercer may find that a dark obsession has become a tempestuous passion that can no longer be denied.

All right so this is by far not one of my favorite reads by Carlyle. I thought she spent too much time having her characters doing the same things in other words the book was slow, and you knew where the characters where going at all times. No surprises, nothing new, wonderful characters in typical situations. 3 out of 5

Wishful Drinking by, Carrie Fisher

Photobucket Blurb: Intimate, hilarious, and sobering, Wishful Drinking is Fisher, looking at her life as she best remembers it (what do you expect after electroshock therapy?). It's an incredible tale: the child of Hollywood royalty -- Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher -- home wrecked by Elizabeth Taylor, marrying (then divorcing, then dating) Paul Simon, having her likeness merchandised on everything from Princess Leia shampoo to PEZ dispensers, learning the father of her daughter forgot to tell her he was gay, and ultimately waking up one morning and finding a friend dead beside her in bed.
I just love Carrie Fisher's writing, she's funny and a bit scary at the same time. I admire her spirit. I've read all four of her books and this is the best so far. 5 out of 5

Pope Joan by Donna Woolfolk Cross

Photobucket
A Synopsis of Pope Joan
As its title reveals, the novel is based on the life of one of the most fascinating, extraordinary women in Western history--Pope Joan, a controversial figure of historical record who, disguised as a man, rose to rule Christianity in the 9th century as the first and only woman to sit on the throne of St. Peter.

Brilliant and talented, young Joan rebels against the medieval social strictures forbidding women to learn to read and write. When her older brother is killed during a Viking attack, Joan takes up his cloak and identity, goes to the monastery of Fulda, and is initiated into the brotherhood in his place. As Brother John Anglicus, Joan distinguishes herself as a great Christian scholar. Eventually she is drawn to Rome, where she becomes enmeshed in a dangerous web of love, passion, and politics. Triumphing over appalling odds, she finally attains the highest throne in Christendom.

Clearly a women before her time, I found her frustrating and interesting. 4 out of 5

Blurb:They were the unlikeliest of friends debauching their way through London: The Earl of Camdonn, a nobleman of vast wealth and power, and Scottish laird Alan MacDonald, a respected Jacobite with ambitions of his own.

Torn between love and duty, Sorcha must watch as the two men she desires go to war over her. And when the battle lines are drawn, all three lovers are lured into a triangle of forbidden passions.

But on her wedding night, she discovers that her handsome, enigmatic husband is not the man he claims to be — and when a more sinister secret emerges, she escapes from his estate into the darkness rather than live a lie with a man she feels she can never know.

Blurb, It was whispered all over London Society that he was a murderer, that he'd spent his youth in an asylum and was not to be trusted--especially with a lady. Any women caught in his presence was immediately ruined. Yet Beth found herself inexorably drawn to the Scottish lord.
I abbreviated the blurb. I bought this book based on customer review via Amazon. The book could not keep my attention, I did not finish. Wealthy businessman Royce Powell, the most eligible bachelor in Dallas, has loved Naomi ever since he saw her at a party she put together. Now Royce has hired her as the planner for his mother's extravagant birthday event. His demand that she work only for him during this period guarantees some quality time together. Royce is handsome, attentive, and romantic--in other words, the perfect man. However, Naomi's experiences with a fickle father and a philandering husband make her doubt Royce and his intentions. Secondary characters, including Naomi's twin cousins, the cleverly named Kera and Mel, add many humorous moments. Although the subtext, learn to trust, is a serious one, Showalter writes with a sparkling humor that keeps the story light without losing poignancy

Mistress In the Art of Death, By Ariana Franklin

Photobucket

Synopsis

In medieval Cambridge, four children have been murdered. The Catholic townsfolk blame their Jewish neighbors, so to save them from the rioting mob, the Cambridge Jews are placed under the protection of the king. King Henry II is no friend of the Jews-or anyone, really-but he believes in law and order, and he desperately needs the taxes he receives from Jewish merchants. Hoping scientific investigation will catch the true killer, Henry calls on his cousin, the King of Sicily-whose subjects include the best medical experts in Europe-and asks for his finest "master of the art of death," the earliest form of medical examiner. The Italian doctor chosen for the task is a young prodigy from the University of Salerno, an expert in the science of anatomy and the art of detection. But her name is Adelia; the king has been sent a "mistress of the art of death."

In a backward and superstitious country like England, Adelia faces danger at every turn. As she examines the victims and retraces their last steps, Adelia must conceal her true identity in order to avoid accusations of witchcraft. Along the way, she's assisted by one of the king's tax collectors, Sir Rowley Picot, a man with a personal stake in the investigation. A former Crusader knight, Rowley may be a needed friend...or the fiend for whom they are searching. As Adelia's investigation takes her along Cambridge's shadowy river paths, and behind the closed doors of its churches and nunneries, the hunt intensifies and the killer prepares to strike again...

The Garden

With the weather being so warm we already have cherry tomatoes and peppers.
The herbs are growing faster than can be used.
I will have to dry and store them for later use.

Curry Chicken

Last night while surfing the net I found a Curry Chicken video. So today for lunch I had a go. Changing it up a bit for our personal taste. I omitted the fresh chile and curry paste because I could not find any at the grocery store, using fresh curry instead.

Overall it was very easy just a few ingredients. Serve over rice, if I were to make it again I would add more tomato paste and heavy cream and adding more salt.

1 med onion chopped small

olive oil to coat the pan for cooking chicken and onions

2 chicken fillets

2 tsp tomato paste

2 cloves chopped garlic

1/4 tsp slat

1/4 tsp turmeric

1/2 tsp cumin

1/4 coriander

1 tsp curry powder yellow

3 Tbs heavy cream

Serve over steamed rice.
